Parting & Grooving Tools vs the Alternatives: Carbide, HSS and Indexable Compared

August 16, 2026 · Exactalloy Technical Team

There is no universally best tool, only the cheapest correct tool for a given batch size, material and machine.

Quick answer: Solid carbide wins on speed and finish; HSS wins on first cost and shock tolerance; indexable wins on large batches and heavy cuts. For parting and grooving tools in production, carbide is normally the lowest cost per part.

Cost per part, not price per tool

A tool that costs three times more but lasts eight times longer and runs twice as fast is the cheaper option.

Where HSS still wins

Hand tapping, low-speed machines, shock loads and one-off work in soft materials.

Where indexable wins

Large diameters, heavy interrupted cuts and long unmanned runs where regrinding logistics dominate.

Decision rule

Batch above roughly 50 parts, CNC machine, material harder than 200 HB → go solid carbide.

Frequently asked questions

Is carbide always more productive?

On a rigid CNC machine, yes. On a worn or flexible machine, carbide chips and HSS can win.

Can I run carbide on a manual machine?

Possible but rarely economic — carbide needs stable speed and feed.
